Creating the Capsule Wardrobe

I have made my first pass at creating a Capsule Wardrobe for Winter. I say ‘first pass’ because ideally I would like to whittle it down a bit more. Right now, I have 45 pieces of clothing, but that does not include shoes/boots or coats. I own a fair number of boots. I’ve tossed several pair into the donate bin and I’ve kept the ones I wear regularly, but that still has the count at 12 pairs, winter boots included. I’m going to go with that for now and see which ones I gravitate to the  most. That will help me get a handle on which ones to keep and which ones I can (reluctantly) part with or switch up and only wear them during a particular season. Clearly my short boots will not be coming out during the winter unless I want frostbitten digits.

I have also decided not to include my winter coats in my capsule count.

I live a 5 minute drive from the Atlantic Ocean which means the weather can be pretty unpredictable from one day to the next. Because of this, I have several winter coats – one is my regular coat that gets the most use from Nov/mid-Jan. Unless it is snowing/sleet/some rain-snow style derivative like we have today. Then I need the rainproofed hooded long coat from MEC. And when the temp drops to -15C or ‘it’s cold enough to freeze body parts out there’, I have to switch once again to the Roots super warm-no wind is cutting through this thing-coat. I also have my trusty vest and this is my go-to casual wear from October to April because it’s comfy and warm, but light to wear. Perfect for running around on the weekend. Any one of these coats can come into play on any day between October to April and sometimes into May. There are days when I need to switch out coats throughout the day because as we say in my neck of the woods, ‘If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it will change.’

I do have a few other coats that I wear occasionally, however, and these will be put in the donate bin. The remaining coats fit within the other seasons and are few in number, so I will put those away until they are ready to come out again.

So here is where my winter wardrobe capsule stands right now:

  • Skirts – 3
  • Dress Pants – 4
  • Dress Shirts – 4
  • Vest – 1
  • Plaid Shirts – 4
  • Sweaters: 11 (6 for work / 5 casual)
  • Hoodies – 3
  • Jeans – 5
  • Casual shirts (long and short-sleeved) – 10

My plan is to stick with this for December and determine which of these items I gravitate to the most and which I don’t. The don’ts will get whittled out in an attempt to bring the number down to 40 or under.

The growing pile of clothes to be donated…
